Remember: Donald Trump, who hardly ever reads, kept a book of Hitler speeches by his bed
If debate moderators had asked the right questions back in 2015 and 2016, we might have avoided having to explain to our kids why the orange Teletubby keeps defending Nazis.
Here are a few questions that we needed answers to before handing the White House keys to a serial-lying Nazi sympathizer who wants to use the Pantone color chart to vet immigrants (anyone darker than “Spiced Beet” has to have a billion dollars and a Nobel Prize, apparently):
You once claimed that you had sent investigators to Hawaii to get information on Obama's birth certificate. You told NBC's Meredith Vieira, "They cannot believe what they're finding." What did they find, who are they, and can we talk to them? If they didn't actually find anything, why did you say they did? If they did find something, don't you think you owed it to the country to reveal it?
Back in the late ‘80s, you famously called for the death penalty for the Central Park Five. They were later proven innocent, but for some reason you still claim they’re guilty. What the f*ck is wrong with you?
Your ex-wife once said you kept a book full of Hitler’s speeches in a bedside cabinet. Seriously, WTF?
Ah, but no. After Megyn Kelly’s barrage of misogyny-related questions in the first Republican debate, the most challenging “gotcha” question Trump received was about the nuclear triad. The question was brutally unfair, of course, because Trump had never heard of the nuclear triad.
But why did all the debate moderators pass on the Hitler question? If a leading candidate for president really did keep Hitler’s speeches at his tiny fingertips, it’s something we should have known about, right?
Well, now we’re all too familiar with Reichsführer Drumpf’s Nazi infatuation. But the information is coming far too late.
Anyway, here’s an excerpt from a 2015 Business Insider article on Trump’s late-night light-reading habits. Would have been nice if more people had seen this two years ago:
According to a 1990 Vanity Fair interview, Ivana Trump once told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that her husband, real-estate mogul Donald Trump, now a leading Republican presidential candidate, kept a book of Hitler's speeches near his bed.
"Last April, perhaps in a surge of Czech nationalism, Ivana Trump told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that from time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler's collected speeches, My New Order, which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed ... Hitler's speeches, from his earliest days up through the Phony War of 1939, reveal his extraordinary ability as a master propagandist," Marie Brenner wrote.

When Brenner asked Trump about how he came to possess Hitler's speeches, "Trump hesitated" and then said, "Who told you that?"
"I don't remember," Brenner reportedly replied.
Trump then recalled, "Actually, it was my friend Marty Davis from Paramount who gave me a copy of 'Mein Kampf,' and he's a Jew."
Brenner added that Davis did acknowledge that he gave Trump a book about Hitler.
"But it was 'My New Order,' Hitler's speeches, not 'Mein Kampf,'" Davis reportedly said. "I thought he would find it interesting. I am his friend, but I'm not Jewish."
After Trump and Brenner changed topics, Trump returned to the subject and reportedly said, "If, I had these speeches, and I am not saying that I do, I would never read them."
In the Vanity Fair article, Ivana Trump told a friend that her husband's cousin, John Walter "clicks his heels and says, 'Heil Hitler’," when visiting Trump's office.
